Integrated MagJack or Discrete LAN Magnetics?

Integrated MagJack and discrete LAN magnetics represent different board-level implementations of Ethernet copper connectivity. Select the implementation based on PHY requirements, PCB layout, isolation, EMI, PoE and mechanical constraints.

Integrated Magnetic RJ45 (MagJack)

Combines the RJ45 connector and isolation magnetics in a single PCB-mounted package, with optional integrated LEDs and shielding depending on the design.

  • Simplified BOM: One component to source and place.
  • Compact Layout: Saves valuable PCB real estate near the edge.
  • EMI Integration: Shorter interconnect paths and integrated shielding can simplify EMI control around the Ethernet port.
  • Best For: High-density switches, space-constrained appliances, standard 10/100/1000/10GBASE-T ports.

Discrete LAN Magnetics + RJ45

Separates the isolation transformer (magnetics) from the physical RJ45 connector on the motherboard layout.

  • Flexible Selection: Mix and match custom magnetics with specific connectors.
  • Thermal Flexibility: Separating the magnetics and connector can provide greater freedom for PCB placement and thermal management in high-current PoE designs.
  • Isolation Flexibility: Discrete magnetics can provide greater flexibility when a design requires specific isolation voltage, creepage, clearance or transformer characteristics.
  • Best For: Highly customized PHY matching, unique mechanical constraints, extreme environments.

Engineering Constraints

Constraints That Determine the Interconnect

PHY Compatibility

  • Impedance MatchingEnsure transformers match the vendor-specific PHY requirements for line impedance.
  • Frequency ResponseMagnetic designs must support the target bandwidth for Multi-Gig and 10GBASE-T.
  • PHY Reference DesignSelection and validation against applicable PHY vendor reference designs and application notes.

Magnetics & PoE

  • Signal IntegrityInsertion loss, return loss and crosstalk are evaluated against applicable Ethernet interface requirements and component specifications.
  • Isolation VoltageSelect the required isolation voltage and Hi-Pot rating based on the Ethernet interface, PoE architecture and applicable safety requirements.
  • PoE ImplementationPoE requirements under IEEE 802.3af/at/bt affect magnetics selection, current handling and thermal design.

Mechanical & PCB

  • Port DensitySelect 1x1, 1xN (multi-port) or 2xN (stacked) profiles tailored to panel and chassis constraints.
  • PCB FootprintEnsure pin layout aligns with through-hole (THT), surface-mount (SMT), or press-fit manufacturing.
  • Cage Thermal ControlAppropriate heatsink selection (fin/pin) based on host airflow and optics wattage.

EMI & Environment

  • Shielding StructureMetal cages, shields and spring contacts can be used to manage EMI and common-mode noise around high-speed interfaces.
  • Operating TemperatureCommercial (0 to 70°C) vs Industrial (-40 to 85°C) component selection.

PHY Compatibility and Platform Validation

Network component reliability starts with matching the magnetics directly to the Ethernet PHY, and validating transceivers on the target platform.

Ethernet PHY Matching

LINK-PP LAN transformers and MagJacks can be selected against Ethernet PHY electrical requirements and reference designs from major PHY vendors, including Broadcom, Marvell, Realtek and Microchip.

Reference: PHY cross-reference data

Signal Integrity (IEEE 802.3)

Electrical characteristics such as insertion loss, return loss and crosstalk can be verified using network-analyzer-based test methods against the applicable Ethernet magnetics specification.

Reference: Electrical performance test data

Host Platform Optics Validation

Compatible optical transceivers are configured with platform-appropriate identification and management data, then validated for module recognition, link establishment and DOM/DDM telemetry where supported.
